based on the comic by Will Eisner
Even empty the bucket weighed a ton, but then nothing was easy for someone who had to steal water from a fire hydrant. She didn’t notice the ache in her back as she filled the bucket. She wasn’t fazed by the strain in her shoulders as she lugged it back up the stairs. She crinkled her nose in disappointment as she once again prepared the same meager meal for her baby, but this too was a reflex action. The only pain she felt, the only shame, was when she was still, when she was plagued by unbidden memories of her once-vivid dreams and of the elaborate lies she’d been telling to everyone back home.
